Why Tonal Outfits Are One of My Favorites

One of my favorite ways to put an outfit together is dressing all in the same tone.  Tonal dressing has been my go to way to pull off an outfit since I saw this picture of Meghan Markle a few years ago. I was reminded how much I love it after seeing Michelle Obama at the inauguration last month.   I even tried recreating Markle’s look at Matt’s company Christmas party that year.  She is definitely a style icon for me with her effortless look and don’t even get me started on her go-to messy bun.

I love this idea because it always looks timeless in my opinion.  It’s easy to use staples from your wardrobe and always looks pulled together.

In thinking about this look, I pulled together some tips that I think really make it work:

Texture

You can very easily wear all the same color, but when you add in different textures of the same color, that’s when your look really comes together.

A Pop of Color

Use your accessories for a pop of color.  I love to do this with a bag or earrings.  I do not typically wear a ton of jewelry and am overall pretty basic in my accessory game, but this is where a statement earring really works for me.

Animal Print

Just a touch of leopard print in an all-black outfit is my jam.  If I don’t know what to wear, this is my go to.  Black dress with a skinny leopard print belt or a black turtle neck with black skinny pants and pointy toe leopard print flats.  Done.  One of these outfits will work for basically any occasion.

Mixing Different Shades of the Same Color

For some reason, I have a very vivid memory of arguing with my mom about wearing two different shades of purple. They didn’t match, I kept telling her.  She said, they don’t have to match, they just have to go.  Mind blown.  Blues and creams are my favorite colors to do this with. Slight variations in color really pulls a look together.

I hope you found some good tips and it helps inspire an easy, but classic look for you.
